More rain on Friday, and significant cooling is expected from Saturday

Rainy and Snowy weather is expected on Friday, with rain and sleet in the west, and snow in the east, but in the evening with strong, sometimes stormy winds, a significant cooling will arrive and the probability of precipitation will decrease. On Sunday morning, there may be a strong frost, and during the day only temperatures of around 0 degrees Celsius are likely – according to the national medium-term forecast of the National Meteorological Service.

Strong Wind to Be Expected

On Friday, the clouds will continue to thicken from the west, the sky will darken, and with it, a precipitation zone will arrive, which will expand to the east. In the east, there may still be some sunshine in the morning hours. Rain and sleet will be more and more common in the west, while it may snow for the longest time in Szabolcs and Borsod. The wind, which initially turns to the southwest and then to the northwest in the evening, is accompanied by strong, sometimes stormy gusts over a large area. The highest daytime temperature is likely to be between 1 and 7 degrees.

During the day on Saturday, the clouds will gradually break up from the northwest, the cloudiness will decrease, and cloud crossings should be expected, usually with several hours of sunshine. With breaks, precipitation is expected in several places until the morning: rain, sleet, and snow in the northeast, and then more and more snow will replace the rain elsewhere. In the second half of the day, there can only be snow showers in some places, and sleet and showers in some places. The north, northwest wind is strong, accompanied by stormy gusts in a large area. In the morning, the temperature will be between minus 3 and plus 4 degrees, in the early afternoon between minus 1 and plus 6 degrees, it will be colder in the northeast and milder in the southwest.

On Sunday, the sky will be slightly or moderately cloudy in most parts of the country, in the west there may be more cloudy areas at times. Considerable precipitation is unlikely, rather, small snowfalls and snow showers may occur in places near the western border, and a snow shower may form between the Danube and the Tisza. The northerly wind will be lively, sometimes strong, and then the air movement will moderate in the evening. The temperature in the morning is usually between minus 1 and minus 8 degrees, but it can be colder in frost corners sheltered from the wind. In the early afternoon, values between minus 3 and plus 3 degrees can be measured.

Meteorology: the coldest part of this winter so far is coming

The coldest part of this winter so far is coming: at the beginning of next week, considerable ground frost may form, and the cold will also encourage plants to rest, the National Meteorological Service wrote in its agrometeorological analysis published.

According to the summary published on their website, the westerly, southwesterly flow typical of January, which caused persistently mild and rainy weather, has already turned to the northwest during the past week, which resulted in much less precipitation and temperatures around average.

They added that the coldest morning occurred on Monday when the air cooled down to between minus 1 and minus 9 degrees Celsius. The average temperature of the last 30 days exceeded the normal value by 3-6 degrees. So far, no significant ground frost has formed in the winter, on some less cloudy nights, the upper few centimeters of the soil could freeze.

The permanently mild weather was not good for the plants, it disrupted their vegetation cycle, and in the absence of cold, pests and pathogens did not become rare either. Weather that is too mild is particularly dangerous for fruit trees: if their deep dormancy ends too soon, they will later become sensitive to frost. Hazelnuts are already blooming in the northeastern part of the country.

They wrote that a strong cooling will follow, and from Saturday, an air mass of arctic origin will begin to flood the Carpathian Basin with high-speed, gusty winds. The maximum temperature is expected to be only slightly above 0 degrees in a large area, and below it in the northeast from Sunday.

From the last day of the week, the night frosts will also get tougher, with temperatures dropping below minus 10 degrees in some places. The first half of next week may be the coldest period of the winter so far, at which time considerable ground frost may form, and the cold will also encourage the plants to rest, they wrote.
